To end off 2010, my old friend Anh Phung came over to my house for a sightreading jam session and chat! It was great to reconnect with her because we literally hadn't seen each other in 5 years since the competition where we first met. :D She won 2nd place and I won 3rd place that time, and we found each other on Facebook a couple years later.
A few years after that, I started video blogging, and she started watching my videos when I made the "Back-to-School" mini-series (Video: Day 1 - The Audition). From that point on, we started to think about getting together to make a video, but she was in Montreal studying jazz flute at McGill, while I was on the other side of the country studying classical flute at UBC. We had initially wanted to mess around with jazz, but because I'm so inadequate in that area, we both decided to wait until the next time she's around so that she can take the time to properly teach me a few licks. She's a fantastic classical flutist as well (she's classically trained from the ripe old age of 4), so we opted to do a sightreading jam this time. Funnily enough, we ended up blindly picking a Baroque piece...which you could say is one of my specialties! :P Thanks, Anh, for making it easier on me this time, haha! ;)
Well, without further ado, here is the mini-series! In our chat, we talked about everything from session work to accents to the Asian-ness of Vancouver. Yeah, I know--SWEET. ;P Enjoy!!
Thanks, Anh, for coming over!! :D Hugs and kisses from the West Coast!!

See you next year!! :) Happy New Year!!
Check out my shoot with Fotowok on my Facebook album! There are a few extra photos I haven't had room to put up on this website! ;D
So how did I find Fotowok? Well, I actually went to high school with Rod, one of the photographers. It was kind of funny because I was a nerd and he was (and still is) a cool hockey player... who would have thought we'd end up collaborating on a photoshoot?! Haha!
In September, Paul, Rod, and I sat down for a coffee, and we discussed what sort of shoot we wanted to do. I wanted something original, fun, casual, and artsy. I knew it was a lot to ask, but I'd seen their work and knew they could do it. :)
On a drizzly late October Sunday morning, we headed to Gerry's Bookstore at Steveston Village in Richmond, BC. Gerry's was AMAZING. It's the tiniest bookstore I've ever been in, but it's stashed from floor to ceiling with books, books, and more books with very tight aisle space between each shelf! The store owner even snagged a picture of me on her little digital camera, which I thought was really cute. ;)
At Gerry's Bookstore. Look how narrow the aisles are!! So cool!!
The funniest thing about this shoot (I didn't dare mention it during the actual shoot) was that I was sitting in a sea of romance novels. Hm.
After a quick lunch, we headed a few blocks down to Violet Hill Boutique. It had the cleanest white walls ever and a perfect little nook for us to set up a makeshift studio! While we tried to keep the shoot low key, we still attracted a little crowd outside the shop, peering through the windows to see what we were doing. Those who walked in were very nice about it, though, and didn't mind that we were shooting away while they shopped. The store owner here was also super nice and allowed us to move some of the racks and chairs around! Paul brought his grandmother's old radio (that still works!!), and I even got to sit on it (precariously...I didn't want to break it!)!
You can only pull off this facial expression in a space like this.
Try doing it in your bathroom mirror. It doesn't work.
Paul's grandmother's radio! It's older than me and still works!!
Hope you guys enjoyed this little inside scoop on the Fotowok photoshoot! ;)
Big thanks to Fotowok, Gerry's Bookstore, and Violet Hill Boutique for helping me make this shoot happen!
Maybe I should stop doing monthly video blog barfs...let's see how this works. ;)
Nachschlag Goes to Squamish!
We (Nachschlag Wind Quintet*) were invited by Lord Byng Secondary school to perform and give clinics for their junior and intermediate bands. It was very fun and rewarding! I realize there isn't any footage of the actual performance on this video, as this video is intended specifically for the enjoyment of Nachschlaggers and the band camp folks. Hope you guys enjoy this little behind-the-scenes look on that day! :)
*Members of Nachschlag Wind Quintet:
Joanna Tse, flute
Emily Hopkins, oboe
Anna Siminoski, clarinet
Neil Jongbloed, horn
Min Ho Kim, bassoon
If you watched some of my earlier videos (Nachschlag Goes to Ladner), you'll probably notice that we have 2 different members this time - Anna and Min Ho. The previous members (Selina Kuo, basson and Connor Learmonth, clarinet) went for further studies at the University of Toronto. When Connor and Selina learned that Anna and Min Ho had joined the quintet, they were very excited to welcome them into the Nachschlag family! :D
