Joanna Tse is currently pursuing a Master of Music in Flute Performance under the tutelage of Linda Lukas, 2nd Flutist of the San Francisco Symphony, at the School of Music and Dance at San Francisco State University (SFSU), where Joanna is flutist and piccoloist of the SFSU Orchestra. Joanna graduated with a Bachelor of Music degree with a major in Flute Performance and a minor in English Literature at the University of British Columbia (UBC) at Vancouver, where she was a flutist in UBC's Symphony Orchestra, Wind Ensemble, Early Music Ensemble, and Chinese Ensemble. During her studies, Joanna received private instruction from Brenda Fedoruk, Principal Flutist of the Vancouver Opera Orchestra and flutist and piccoloist of the National Broadcast Orchestra. Joanna also completed her Royal Conservatory of Music (Toronto) Flute Performer’s ARCT Diploma.

Joanna has also studied with Camille Churchfield, former principal flutist of the Vancouver Symphony Orchestra, and Michelle Caimotto, principal flutist of the San Jose Opera Orchestra. She has won a number of awards, including prizes in the Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver, third place in the 14th Annual Bjorn and Lori Hareid Senior Secondary Competition (2006) held by the Vancouver Academy of Music, and third place in the Vancouver Women’s Musical Society 2009 Scholarship Competition.

When Joanna was accepted into the UBC School of Music in 2007, she was invited to join the newly developed Nachschlag Wind Quintet, composed of five students from the UBC School of Music. They were first-place winners of their class at both the Kiwanis Music Festival in Vancouver and the Performing Arts BC Provincials, and they continued on in their second and third years together to become two-time winners of the senior division of the Friends of Chamber Music competition. They toured the Okanagan with Artsway in 2009, 2010, and 2011, providing live music to senior’s homes and centres. In January 2010, they were chosen to participate in Music Bridge Opus 2010, in which they performed at UBC and University of Victoria with a student quintet sent from the G. F. Ghedini Conservatorio in Cuneo, Italy. Nachschlag Wind quintet also provides annual concerts for their local community and recently performed their fourth annual recital in May 2011.

Joanna also loves making flute video tutorials and documenting her experiences as a classical musician for over 2,000 subscribers on her YouTube channel. Through her informal but informative style, Joanna hopes to reach audiences who wonder what people who play music written by mostly dead people do for a living.
